Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Candice Bergen, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement after the passing of former Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe:
“I am shocked and saddened to hear the news of Shinzo Abe’s assassination.
“His tenure as the longest-serving Prime Minister of Japan was critical in strengthening Canada-Japan relations. His legacy is one of a commitment to regional prosperity and security which is reflected in treaties like the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, of which both Canada and Japan are signatories.
“On behalf of the Conservative Party of Canada, I offer my deepest condolences on Mr. Abe’s passing. My thoughts are with his wife, loved ones and the people of Japan at this time."
